Why is it that whenever President Bush performs yet another unconscionable act, diehard Republicans immediately revert back to “all the terrible things” President Clinton did during his presidency? Every time I read letters similar to Monday’s “What about all of Clinton’s pardons?” my heart breaks a little.
Instead of stretching – far – for someone else to blame, take a good, long look at what Mr. Bush has done to us. We have been at war for years, even though he took a photo opportunity to tell the world “mission accomplished.” He has basically thwarted every human rights issue placed before him. He spies on us and taps our telephones, without any legal right to do so, in the name of “anti-terrorism.” He has embarrassed and humiliated himself, his administration and his country on a fairly regular basis. Mr. Bush’s approval rating is hovering around 31 percent. And that certainly includes more than one or two of the writer’s Republican brethren.
And now – in an effort to keep Scooter Libby quiet – he commutes Libby’s prison sentence for reasons which are not legal, then claims executive privilege so his aides can’t testify against him or the White House in yet another “scandal.” Members of his own party are distancing themselves from him.
Don’t bother trying to divert attention from Bush’s failures. They are everywhere. Blaming Bill Clinton for doing what every president does when they leave office – not the year before – does not help anyone. Open your eyes.
