With the loud but romantic blast of a train’s horn, another major milestone will be passed this morning at Everett Station.
When a northbound Amtrak train pulls into the station at around 8:35 a.m., it will mark the beginning of passenger rail service through the city’s magnificent transportation facility, making the station’s nine-year journey from idea to reality virtually complete.
City and Amtrak officials will celebrate with the public at 5 p.m. today when the east-west Empire Builder arrives from Seattle, and celebrate they should. Everett Station is a shining accomplishment, giving travelers and commuters an efficient, modern and beautiful base for train and bus service.
Amtrak, which will run six trains out of Everett Station each day, joins Greyhound, Sound Transit, Community Transit and Everett Transit with service from the station. Plans call for Sounder commuter rail service to be added as early as December of next year.
The four-story building itself is a sight to behold inside and out, from its red brick and copper-tiled roof to the interior decor that seamlessly melds cultural history with modern comforts. It delivers functionality in transportation and beyond, housing a variety of college classes and WorkSource Everett, a career-development agency.
Everett has reason to be proud of its station. Come on down this afternoon and celebrate.
