Saturday, May 11 was the date of the largest one-day food drive in the nation, The NALC/ USPS Annual Food Drive. The National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 791 and the United States Postal Service are proud to announce that 365,000 pounds of food were collected on May 11 to help stock the food banks throughout the county for the summer months.
While the national totals are not in yet, Snohomish County’s results are in, and once again, the generous citizens of our county came through with flying colors. This is our way of giving back to the community by making it as easy as possible for you to show you care also. The city and rural letter carriers were proud to do our part, as well as the other postal and non-postal volunteers that helped. Without you and all of the volunteers, this task could not have been accomplished.
For the people who left food out for the carriers in Arlington that did not get picked up, my sincere apologies. The Postmaster of Arlington decided not to participate in this year’s drive. As a result, I know many who did leave food out did not have it picked up. We will be working this year to try and find a solution to this problem. The carriers worked long and hard on Saturday and if any food was missed we are sorry and hope you will give us another chance.
This year, as always, the task of getting the word out and the food to the food banks requires a lot of planning and help. The bags to put the food in were supplied by Operation Short Fall, the Snohomish County Labor Council, United Way of Snohomish County, Campbell Nelson Volkswagen, IAM District Lodge 751, Edmonds Lions Club, and Cost Cutters. Our thanks go out to them.
Also, we could not get the word out and the food to the food banks without the generous support and assistance of The Herald, KRKO, KSER and AT&T Broadband. We couldn’t have unloaded and moved the tons of donated food without Hogland’s Transfer, Kooy Trucking, AmeriCorps volunteers, Volunteers of America and the rural letter carriers of Snohomish County, as well as all of the other volunteer help. But most of all we could not have done it without you, the residents of Snohomish County. Again thank you all.
