Being a 21-year-old female, I have been in my fair amount of adult video stores, and I am not ashamed to say so. Which is why as I was driving down 7th Avenue on Saturday I was shocked to see a group of older men sitting with huge picket signs in front of the new Taboo Video that just opened. A sign that screamed out, “What if your children had to live next to this?” left me outraged.
As a customer of this store I would like to point out that the service was excellent, and the other customers were not pedophiles or drug abusers waiting to jump the fence of the corner preschool. The store itself has all its windows covered up, and nothing indicating it is a harmful place. Which means to be offended by the store, or for the store to actually hurt anyone, they would have to actually enter the store, and I doubt the toddlers will be crawling into the place anytime soon.
I’m not sure whether people have just not gotten the idea that we’re not in the early ’50s anymore and viewing pornography doesn’t mean you’re a pervert or a sadist, or whether its an issue that there’s a Catholic middle school down the street. Either way, if you’re driving down 7th Avenue and you see a girl with a giant sign that says “Porn won’t hurt your kids, but ignorance will,” make sure to wave at her, because I won’t sit around watching people take advantage of my rights.
