I sincerely hope I am not alone in noticing the irony of two stories appearing side-by-side in the July 14 paper: In one, the Dalai Lama is defending Islam as a peaceful religion; in the other, we see two burqa-clad women shortly before their execution for prostitution — a charge without substance, according to their governor. How is it that the leader of an oppressed people can defend the Taliban as victims? If Islam wishes to be seen as non-violent, it needs more than window dressing from someone playing politics; it must cease killing innocent people, whether in their own lands or abroad.
