Contrary to what your simplistic editorial would have readers believe, the building height issue is the “tip of the iceberg,” representing many critical issues. The building height issue is a catch-all for what is wrong with the current City Council majority. Candidates running on the “building height” issue know this – I’m surprised your newspaper does not know the issues behind building heights.
Some of the issues behind building height are:
Control of the City Council by businesses or residents?
City Council paternalism or representative democracy?
Preserving neighborhoods or becoming a retail center?
The role of government – protecting individuals or promoting business?
Instead of promoting business growth and protecting residential property rights, the current City Council majority has polarized these issues by running roughshod over the concerns of the residents of Edmonds.
Edmonds voters have opportunity to return the City Council to a body that represents votes by electing:
Ron Wambolt, a business executive who has stated to make “public safety the number one funding priority”; and re-electing Deanna Dawson, who has repeatedly fought for open and fair government for the residents of Edmonds; and Michael Plunkett, who knows the issues behind building heights.
Yes, they all oppose increasing building heights: but in doing so, they oppose what is wrong with the current City Council majority.
