I am deeply disappointed to read of Everett School District Superintendent Gary Cohn’s decision not to renew Steve Bertrand’s contract as coach of Cascade High’s cross-country team. (“Supporters shocked by dismissal of Cascade coach Bertrand.”)
I have known Steve Bertrand for a number of years. He is a caring, hard-working, dedicated coach, who is liked by both the students and the parents. He is extremely knowledgeable in the art and science of running and, as a competitive age-group runner himself, he is an excellent role model for Cascade High’s student athletes.
Steve did make a mistake in having the cross-country team distribute flyers in support of Mike Wilson’s political campaign. Steve admits that this decision was wrong and, knowing Steve, I am confident nothing like this will happen again.
I strongly recommend that the Everett School District reconsider the district’s decision and reinstate Steve Bertrand as the coach of Cascade High’s cross-country team.
