The Brightwater sewage treatment plant is a symptom of bigger problems beyond sewage. One of them is the issue of the state of regional leadership.
Ron Sims is too powerful. The ability to make such a decision should not be vested in the hands of one person.
Real regionalism would begin with a diverse community leadership, and an ability to question assumptions in a very public way so the communities involved can feel they are a part of the actual decision-making process, not just treated to public relations soft soap about “input.”
Having recently moved here from Texas where I heard th “growth will pay for growth” assurance given by old-style strong man politicians, something seems out of kilter. Growth brings new demands on services which escalates the public debt. That is what actually happens.
Why is eminent domain needed if Brightwater is really such a good idea and really serves regional goals so well? Why such an Orwellian moniker – stolen no less from the novel “Ring of Bright Water? Sewage plant as Disney World?
