In response to the Friday letter writer’s disappointment that Mayor Donetta Walser and Monroe’s elected officials considered cutting YMCA funding, I must present the other side of the story.
While I agree the YMCA is supportive and dedicated to its community members, I know Monroe’s elected officials and employees are, as well. The suggestion made by Monroe officials was purely a fiscal one in an attempt to save city personnel. The point some are missing is the fact that for the life of the contract there will be that much less money for necessary city staffing.
In the letter writer’s words, Monroe is described as “An ideal place to raise an active and healthy family.” While I agree it certainly is, I hope with understaffed city departments and fewer police officers patrolling the streets it stays that way. But then again, if free city services keeps us skinny and in shape (the important things in life), I guess we’ll be OK.
