Thank you for the picture and article about the old Puget Sound icon. (“Kalakala to be scrapped; end of iconic Puget Sound ferry.”) It brought back many memories. I never had a ride on her, but I have sat many a night in the pilothouse, top deck starboard side, (while delivering shrimp or king crab) talking to the night watchman about fishing or hunting. That was his studio apartment. The vessel I fished on at the time, the Western Dawn out of Ballard, with Captains Thor Olsen and Nils Strom delivered our catches to New England Fish Co. in Gibson Cove on Kodiak Island, which was the Kalakala.
As a “cheekachoo” (greenhorn), the first time I laid eyes on her coming around the “spit” I thought it was one of the most beautiful old vessels ever built. With so much wealth around the Sound, I am sad to see her scrapped. However, my own pictures, memories and one brass pilot house port hole frame, she will live in my memory forever.
