Donald Trump became president by acknowledging that the vast majority of people in the United States are unhappy with the status quo of government that represents the economic interests of the ultra-wealthy and ignores the needs of ordinary citizens. In the face of overwhelming evidence to support this conclusion, the Democratic Party elite rejected an incredibly popular anti-status quo candidate and fielded … Hillary. OMG! The rest is both history and an incredibly frightening future.
Now, by pitting Boeing against Northrup Grumman, Trump is again acknowledging an obvious truth that the Democratic Party ignores at its great peril: Real people do not believe that corporations are real people. The majority of people in this country see big corporations as over-empowered heartless bureaucratic machines that will do literally anything, including killing people and destroying the entire system of life on this planet, if it makes an extra buck for their bottom line.
Let me spell it out for the Democratic Party elite: It is not your job to represent the interests of the ultra-wealthy and their corporations. That’s the Republicans’ job. It’s the Democrats’ job to be the counter-balance to them. Democrats already let the Republicans steal the anti-status quo vote from the party, even though they represent exactly what most Americans feel is wrong with the status quo. If you now allow Trump to co-opt the base’s near universal disapproval of big corporations, the party will be relegated to the dust heap of history. And rightly so. Wake up, Democratic leadership.
