Recently the Democrats, led by Sen. Tom Daschle, tied up the Senate with a filibuster to stop discussion on the Federal Marriage Amendment. What the heck for? Are they afraid they’ll get kicked out of office? We already know where they stand.
Debate has always been a trademark of the United States. We debated declaring independence, a very controversial subject at the time. Today the Democrats are afraid to open the debate about what constitutes a marriage. It wasn’t a debate in 1776 because everyone then knew what marriage was: one man, one woman. Our children’s futures are at stake here. Shouldn’t childrens’ issues be at the forefront of our discussion? What could be more important to our children than the condition of the world around them? What could make more of an impact on our children than the family unit and family values?
What is good for our posterity must constantly be asked. Although there are several family issues which deserve discussion, I believe the most important debate of our society is what makes a healthy family? And what else could be more central to the question of what makes a healthy family than what makes a healthy parental unit? I believe Americans want what’s best for our little ones.
Why do people want to block the debate on this important topic? Sens. Tom Daschle, Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray all voted against the marriage amendment. Wouldn’t it be a feather in their cap to have the issue openly debated and defeated in the public arena? Couldn’t they stand proud and proclaim that the American people want freedom of marital choice and have mandated it in open, public debate? What are they afraid of?
