I saw a man stealing food from a grocery store the other day. He saw me as he tucked some sausages into his coat. He approached me and in a quiet voice said, “Please, my children are starving.”
I didn’t know how to respond and as he left the store I followed him. In the back of a rundown car were two children. His face showed fear as I approached. I gave him all the cash I had. I wish I had more.
As I drove home with my own bags of groceries I realized things are worse than I thought. Unemployment is at near record levels. The food banks have record needs. Record numbers of people are losing homes. Where do you go when you have no home, no relatives? A man should not have to steal to feed his children.
