I was deeply disturbed to open the newspaper on the Fourth of July and see that some organization has decided to try and make Independence Day into a religious holiday. The message of the “In God We Trust” paid advertisement is that everyone from the founding fathers to the Supreme Court recognizes America as a Christian nation, and that it would make perfect sense to have the Bible form the basis of the curriculum in public schools in this country!
The most recent reference or quote on this full page ad seems to be from the mid-19th century. Fortunately, we have come a long way forward in our national, cultural consciousness since then. But, even the founders realized that freedom and religious tyranny were not compatible, and they purposefully formed a government that was not founded on any religion. I guess the authors of the advertisement are OK with religious tyranny, as long as they get to be the tyrants.
