Dino Rossi’s new TV ad makes a point of announcing that he is for “better schools.” Great — who isn’t? But this laughable lack of substance is a cover for something more sinister: When you get into specifics, Rossi’s policies pose a real threat to public education. As a state senator, Rossi voted to slash funding that would have decreased class sizes and provided cost-of-living wage increases for teachers — even after voters had passed measures to fund those initiatives. Meanwhile, Rossi would take $3 billion out of the general fund to pay for his unwieldy eight-lane Highway 520 bridge proposal, but guess where that money would be cut from? That’s right: education.
Rossi tries to talk the talk on education, but he certainly has never walked the walk. Don’t fall for the platitudes and clichés — Rossi is no friend to public schools.
