As a public health nurse and reader, I feel compelled to respond to Julie Muhlstein’s April 29 column, “Don’t go to work sick? Yeah, sure.”
The CDC and local health departments have a big job on their hands in the wake of the development of the swine influenza outbreak. Millions in this country lack immunity to this virus, and are susceptible to infection if exposed. A commentary that makes light of the recommendation to isolate at home if illness symptoms of this disease occur is irresponsible journalism. I would urge readers of The Herald and their families to be familiar and follow recommendations coming from your local public health officials. We are blessed in this country to have the safety net of public health, in times of wellness and in times of outbreak of disease.
It is our personal responsibility as employees and employers, and as citizens, to follow good health habits to prevent the occurrence and spread of infectious disease in our communities.
