Regarding the possibility of creating a streetcar system to connect major economic and employment centers in downtown Everett:
While I like the idea of connecting various “centers” in Everett, I strongly oppose the creation of a streetcar line. Why not, instead, purchase distinctive buses – perhaps made to look similar to trolley cars – and run them on the same paths as the streetcars might travel?
The city could afford to pay for very nice buses with the money saved from laying tracks. Perhaps the buses could be fueled by locally produced bio-diesel, thereby strengthening the local farm economy. Rather than tearing up local streets and impairing businesses for long periods of time, the buses could run on designated lanes and have permanent right of way.
As a life-long resident of Everett I am excited about the new areas of development in our city. Having designated buses to connect them is a great idea. Building streetcar tracks is too expensive and too disruptive.
