The Granite Falls School District will have a bond issue for a new high school on the Sept. 17 primary election ballot. As the new superintendent for the district, I carefully reviewed the facility plan prior to accepting the position here in Granite Falls.
The proposed high school is a result of a two-year, long-term facility study developed through research, community surveys and financial considerations. The plan addresses three main ideas: to capture as much state funding as possible (approximately $9 million), to maximize all existing facilities and allow maximum student growth for long-term needs.
I am convinced this is the time to build the new high school. Over the past 10 years, student enrollment has grown by more than 1,000 students. New housing developments continue to open, which will bring more students to our schools. A new high school is inevitable. For each year the school is postponed, we will face a substantial increase in construction costs. Also, with the current low interest rates, we could see a dramatic savings over the life of the bonds. Preparing now for the future is fiscally responsible and prudent for the overall community.
I ask all voters to carefully consider all of the information available concerning this bond issue and support it with your vote on Sept. 17.
