What is the number one anti-drug activity among teens? It’s playing a musical instrument. A recent poll showed that teens who take music lessons are far less likely to take drugs.
Many students choose sports over music, however, preferring the camaraderie of team sports to the many hours of solitary practice that mastery of an instrument demands. If only there were a way to turn music into a social activity.
But there is – orchestra. It brings young musicians together to have fun and make beautiful music. Students find inspiration and enjoyment being with other musicians. It is also a powerful asset to recruit young families to the area.
Why then is the Everett School District making it impossible for the Everett Youth Symphony Orchestra to stay in Everett? Why have rental fees been raised to exorbitant levels? Why is it impossible for EYSO to secure the dates it needs for concerts at the Civic Auditorium?
Everett should support and encourage its youth symphony as a community treasure.
