Since Sept. 11, 2001 we have lost thousands of jobs in aerospace and defense in Snohomish County. Many people are retired, or de facto retired, and living on a fixed income. This is not a good time for tax increases.
Marysville teachers must realize what the bigger picture is, and return to work without a contract while the new contract is negotiated. The school district must get back to basics and ask less from the taxpayers.
Return to the concept of providing basic education for the majority of students who want an education. Don’t spend money on kids who are disruptive or don’t want to be in school. Cut way back on money spent on sports programs; let local booster clubs shoulder a greater share of sports costs. Cut way back on special education programs; a greater share of special ed costs should be borne by the parents and families of special ed students, and by church and private charities.
There are many unnecessary costs that are dictated by state and federal laws. For example, unchecked immigration, both legal and illegal, creates huge costs for local school districts. Lobby your congressman to ask for federal aid, and to pass laws restricting immigration.
Finally, consider the fact that it is illegal for teachers to strike in many states (including the ultra-liberal state of Massachusetts).
