Despite the superintendent salary figures recently published, the Snohomish County school district that spends the least amount per student on all administrative costs (school board, superintendent office, business office, personnel office, public relations, principals offices and departmental supervision) is the Monroe School District.
Monroe spends $985 per student on all forms of administration (including the superintendent salary and benefits), while the average district spends $1,140. In fact, out of every $1 Monroe spends in the general fund, only 11.7 cents is spent on administration. In terms of spending their funds on students, Monroe and Edmonds share the lead in spending 72.4 cents out of every general fund dollar on teaching, extracurricular, libraries, counselors and health services.
This information, and more, can be seen online at the Office of Superintendent’s website: www.k12.wa.us/safs/PUB/FIN/0809/fs.asp
While all school districts have incredible challenges, they are all under rigorous scrutiny to be efficient. I suggest that the real focus should be on adequate, reliable funding.
