In Wednesday’s Herald there was an article concerning the use of cell phones while driving and the number of tickets given in the past few weeks for said use. While I agree with the law and the intent, I do not believe the driving public will pay much attention to the law until our law enforcement officers also obey the law. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen state troopers, county sheriff deputies and city police officers driving and talking on their cell phones.
I do understand that there is an exemption for emergency situations, but with as many law enforcement officers I have seen talking while driving, I cannot accept that each and every conversation was/is of an emergency nature. The solution is simple and safe: hold each law enforcement entity to the same standards as the driving public and require an approved, hands-free device in each patrol vehicle.
As a friend of mine said, “Why should I stop using my cell phone in the car when I see the cops talking and driving all the time?” I would hope my friend’s attitude was the exception, but unfortunately I think many people will agree with him.
