Referendum 51 might best be described as the environmental engineers’ full employment referendum. Despite all the rhetoric to the contrary, R51 does very little to reduce road congestion in our county, let alone in our state. Instead, it funds environmental studies and other minimal work on over 100 proposed projects around the state, but finishes almost nothing, thereby guaranteeing that our legislators will seek more tax increases in the future.
How do I know this? By reviewing the state Department of Transportation’s Web site. Take a look at the proposed facts for yourself (including the fine print), and you’ll see a little bit of nothing for everyone. Then you can judge for yourself whether to expect a sufficiently improved commute to justify your lightened wallet.
