Thank you to all the courageous parents, siblings and friends who recently spoke out in favor of tougher penalties for vehicular homicide. The rally at Madison Elementary demonstrated that a neighborhood can pull together and make its streets safer for all. I hope I never have to hear another mother’s broken sobs as she speaks of the loss of a 16-year-old son.
Our four children grew up within blocks of the Pecks Drive location where Brian Kronberger was run down by a VW van last March. Our kids delivered newspapers along nearby Beverly Lane, walked to school or caught the bus close by, and happily recited “Drive 25 (mph) and stay alive on Beverly Lane” to whoever would listen. Thank God, our kids are still with us.
That so far the negligence that resulted in Brian’s death has drawn only a $490 fine for the driver is beyond comprehension. The law-abiding, taxpaying citizens of this county deserve to be protected from people who use cars as weapons. From our elected officials, we demand this basic protection. Don’t let Brian’s death be in vain.
