Often times we become aware of those citizens who work behind the scenes to make our community a better place. These people are really unsung heroes.
Such a person was Don Rider who recently passed away. Behind the scenes he was a “shaker and mover” which greatly benefited the Everett community and also Snohomish County.
He was active in the Snohomish County Boys & Girls Club and also instrumental in starting the Everett Boys Club Auction.
I was fortunate to have been a member of the Everett Jaycees when Don served as president. During that year he was selected by state Jaycee leaders as the Outstanding Local Jaycee President in the state. At that time there were over 100 Jaycee chapters statewide.
Don also served as a member of the Everett School Board, Commissioner of the Silver Lake Water District and on the Snohomish County Civil Service Commission. Giving a lot of time and effort which benefited various citizens of the community.
But, behind the scenes he was working on various projects such as the school levy and bond issues for the Everett School District. He also worked with political leaders on the Everett City Council, Snohomish County Council and state legislators. And at all times he was working on issues of benefit to the community.
It is my opinion that this was a great loss to the community when he relocated to California several years ago.
I knew Don for over 60 years. He was my good friend for those many decades. I will miss this exceptional man and my friend.
