Last weekend, the Republican Party began running TV ads aimed at elevating George Bush’s ratings by, once again, questioning the patriotism of those who would questions his policies as commander in chief and suggesting that Americans tell their congressional delegations that they support Bush’s doctrine of preemptive self defense.
Unfortunately, the only part of the doctrine that he got right was “strike first.” In order to be “self defense” there should be some threat that is proved at the conclusion of the preemptive strike. No WMD plus no links to al-Qaida (until George invited them into Iraq with his “bring it on” rhetoric) equals no threat to the United States, equals failed policy. There may be a time for a preemptive strike but this certainly was not it and those who questioned this policy from the start have been proven right many times over.
Indeed, my fellow citizens, contact your representatives in Congress. Tell them that George Bush should not be trusted with our national security and that they should begin doing their job of oversight and controlling the purse strings before he puts the treasury into an even larger hole than he has already dug.
