I once observed an Airedale chase the shadow of a butterfly. I was amused not because the animal didn’t know any better, but because I’ve observed creatures who ought to know better do the same thing.
What, after all, is a shadow? Which begs the question: What is an image? Is not an image once removed from the thing of which it is an image?
The obvious examples of images include reflections and, of course, shadows. Plato, in his great dialogue entitled “The Republic,” admonished his readers not to confuse images of whatever kind with reality. Therefore, would it not be correct to deduce that an image-conscious society is ruled by ignorance, where the latter is an ethical choice and not the playful frolicking of an Airedale?
A quarter of a million dollars to create an image for Everett? Indeed!
