According to letter writer Rose Fatel, (“Holiday Greetings: A country founded on religious freedom,” Dec. 31) religious freedom is denying the Merry Christmas greeting and the singing of Christmas carols. But providing for information Hanukkah and lighting the Menorah is OK.
I have no objection to the group she belongs to giving her the opportunity to share information about Hanukkah and even lighting the Menorah, but when they delete the singing of carols, how many people’s freedoms have been denied? If it was a Jewish group, I can understand. But if it was a mixed group, it was most unfair to those who celebrate Christmas, to bow to someone and go overboard in permitting the information about Hanukkah and the lighting of the Menorah. It’s not the latter that I object, but the deleting of Christmas. They could have done both. The singing of carols is giving information about Christmas.
Christmas is the celebration of the most famous Jew of all time. There are countless hospitals, schools, food and clothing for the hungry and cold and many who have been rescued from hopeless lives the world over because of the love inspired by Jesus, whose birthday is celebrated on Christmas.
Say “Happy Holidays,” “Happy Hanukkah” or any other greeting you may wish to choose, but please let those who choose “Merry Christmas” celebrate too. Then we will be a country that has true religious freedom.
