In response to the Feb. 19 letter to the editor, “Transportation: We spend too much money on the bureaucracy.”
I find it interesting that people attempt to armchair quarterback the Department of Transportation. Citing Sound Transit as “folly,” Sounder Rail as “non-existent,” and calling for the privatization of Metro shows how out of touch the letter writer is with reality.
Thousands and thousands of commuters find their way to Seattle or Bellevue every day either on Sound Transit buses, trains, Community Transit commuter coaches, Metro commuter buses, and numerous ferries across the Sound – that means thousands and thousands of personal vehicles off the already congested I-5 corridor. Just spend a couple of hours each morning in bumper-to-bumper traffic and it becomes painfully obvious that building more lanes won’t solve the problem. The solution is reducing traffic flow.
I do agree that government could spend its money a lot wiser, and I’m all for less waste, fraud and outright theft of funds by those involved. In fact, I think we should put “Mr. Initiative,” Tim Eyman, in charge of state transportation. Wait. He got caught with his hand in the cookie jar, too, didn’t he?
