Don’t make fear a ‘family value’

I’m writing this message to the members of the Christian right who voted for President Bush. Recently I have seen letters denouncing the Democrats’ rhetoric and stating that “Hatred is not a family value.” On this, we agree.

But apparently fear, intolerance and distrust are. These are the things we are teaching to our kids. We are teaching them that not everyone has the right to fall in love and marry whom they want. We are teaching our little girls that we do not have faith in their decisions, that their bodies are not theirs. We are showing them a world where expressing any difference in opinion, whether valid or not, is frowned upon and ridiculed. We cry out to protect the “sanctity of marriage” and “family values,” and yet there is a 50 percent divorce rate in this country, higher in the larger cities, and yet no one speaks of that.

I am not a “secularist liberal.” I was raised Catholic, and while I may not believe now in all the church enspouses, I have learned these valuable lessons: God made and loves each and every one of us just the way we are. We are as he made us, we are all doing what he wishes. Faith can help overcome many wrongs in society, but can also cause many of those wrongs, especially when not tempered by rational thought.

So congratulations on the great victory you have achieved. You earned it, no question. But remember, before you speak out against your fellow man for their differences, look down, look in the eyes of your children and think about the values you are teaching them. Do you really want that in your family?
