To quote Tim Eyman’s Sept. 20 op-ed on the merits of Initiative 267: “This measure defines peak hours as 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday.”
In what alternative reality does Tim Eyman reside? Because Western Washington residents and politicians have, in large part, failed to address transportation problems, “peak” hours begin before 6 a.m. and do not end until after 7 at night. Unless, of course, the Mariners, Seahawks or Sonics are playing – or it’s Bite of Seattle weekend – or Bumbershoot – and that’s only for Seattle-bound roads.
The carpool lanes should not be open to all drivers. Western Washington residents who drive alone all of the time should not be able to take up the one lane devoted to individuals who are trying to change driving habits by taking the bus or carpooling when they can.
I notice that Mr. Eyman never mentions mass transportation alternatives in his op-ed. He merely complains about new taxes on roads. Unfortunately, if we don’t build new alternative transit systems, no taxes or Eyman initiatives will save us from years of gridlock in the future.
It’s my future, Mr. Eyman. I voted against I-695 as an 18-year-old, and I’ll vote against I-267 today. Tim Eyman seems like a very intelligent person. Why doesn’t he put his efforts into an initiative that will actually help all of us in the future, instead of merely giving our wallets a boost today?
