It is unfathomable to think that the City of Snohomish would wish to pave over a cemetery. (Aug. 9 article, “City to excavate old cemetery.”) The desecration of any cemetery is a desecration of human consolation and compassion. We take our family and friends to their final resting place and a place of honor.
To learn that the City of Snohomish is willing to turn their backs on the pioneers of this region must make our early settlers spin in their graves. The pioneer cemetery is not an obscure or lost site. It is a prominent and visible memorial and it shall remain so.
We should ask ourselves: Would we be better off to tear down all monuments to our founders, our fallen soldiers, our ancestors who risked so much for a community than to remember those who walked before us?
