Kudos to recent writers of letters to the editor regarding children separated from parents at the border.
When I was 8, I was permanently separated from my father, a single parent. I watched my father removed from the courthouse in handcuffs, headed for prison. I was placed in an institution and eventually placed with foster parents where I did farm work until I turned 18. No love, only shame. I’m now 82, and I don’t believe I experienced the damage and trauma all are decrying now for the separated immigrant children.
I am relatively normal, in my opinion. Please don’t anticipate and project onto little children trauma caused by separation from their parents. It might be your own fears you are projecting and they might subconsciously feel it. Instead, wish them well and know they will be well protected and safe.
