Don’t sign petitions against K-12 sexual health education

Please offer your strong public support to implement comprehensive sexual health education for grades K-12. These requirements would assure that every Washington student can access comprehensive sex health information essential for their lifetimes. Sadly, an opposition group, bolstered by inaccurate social media posts, is misleading the public about these new requirements. This misinformation could deprive our children of essential information about sexuality.

As a retired regular and special educator of 30 years, I have seen the critical need to provide all students, including those who are our most vulnerable, with accurate and objective sex education. Parents need the partnership of educators. Age-appropriate sex education begins early by first helping K-third graders set personal boundaries and communicate those limits. These early skills help protect children against sexual exploitation and foster appropriate future sexual relationships. Comprehensive information about sex and sexuality as they mature will give every child communication tools to resist inappropriate pressure, the cognitive skills to respect others’ boundaries, and the skills to report when they have been bullied by peers or sexually exploited by adults.

New requirements provide several choices for curriculum adoption by local schools and are grounded in family-value partnerships. The secondary school curriculum includes medical and scientifically accurate information designed to encourage a lifetime of sexual health.

Help dispel the misinformation meant to derail effective school implementation. Resist signing any petition on this bill. Learn the facts about Comprehensive Sexual Health Education directly from the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
