Regarding the Sunday article, “How grand a flag for Everett park?”:
Count me in. Every time I drive by Harborview Park I hum that old 1800s British tune: “We don’t want to fight, Yet by jingo, if we do, We’ve got the ships, we’ve got the men, And got the money, too!” Now all we need is a 20-by-36 foot garrison flag (and a really tall pole) so that even the troops stationed at Oak Harbor and Bremerton can see it. And remember, the first flag is free.
But why stop there? This is for our troops, so let’s get it right. We don’t need no stinkin’ night light. I propose that Mayor Stephanson and the City Council meet at the park every morning and evening to raise and lower the colors. They may have to order in some department heads for help, because a flag that size takes a few folks to fold it properly.
We’ll need music. Please add a huge speaker system to play the National Anthem and military march music when the flag is flying. Install extra speakers on the Grand Avenue bank aimed at the base below. My mail-order company, “Big Huge Speakers and Expensive Accessories,” can provide that system, and I’ll throw in a plug-adaptor for free.
At the Marine Corp Recruit Depot they have a buzzer that can be heard everywhere on the base. It’s activated when it’s time to raise or lower the colors. We’ll need to put those buzzers throughout the city so that citizens will know when it’s time to turn toward the flag and salute or do something else patriotic. My mail-order company, “Lots of Big Loud Buzzers” can provide them, and I’ll even write up the first order for free.
Oh yeah, rain vs. big flag equals droopy flag. Well, my mail-order company, “Big Huge Fans …”
