Reading about the flap between Snohomish County Tomorrow and the recently elected republican majority on the Snohomish County Council rekindled my dormant cynicism about county politics.
It seems, in scrambling to take the high road of dispassionate statistical analysis, the new Republican majority has spun a fine sounding web around their basic philosophy, “money talks.” Of course realtors and developers are going find the study overflowing with errors; it means they will not be able to make as much money as they want to. (For many, this desire is insatiable – “Not until the last tree is cut, the last river damned, the last fish caught, will they discover they cannot eat money.”)
Perhaps Councilmen John Koster, Jeff Sax and those who financed their elections last November ought to do the right thing and open up their own properties to development. I’m sure they, in their compassion for those who can’t stand to live in condos or apartments (especially those residents of the Monroe prison they insisted on counting as part of their new and more realistic population numbers) would be more than happy to build them affordable houses in their own back yards.
