Regarding Thursday’s article “Cable barrier talk goes public:” I am seriously frustrated by comments such as this by Theresa Hart of Stanwood, directed at the DOT regarding the median crossing accidents along I-5 in Marysville :
“I want to know what their plans are before somebody else has to die,” Hart said. “They need to be accountable to the public about what they’re going to do. It makes them more responsible when they know they’re being watched.”
There must be hundreds of thousands of miles of interstate with no barriers. Is the DOT responsible for all inept drivers operating their vehicles carelessly and illegally? I do not believe any of the accidents were caused by anything other than driver error.
I realize it must be horrible to be the victim of some other driver’s carelessness, and if/when the DOT finds it appropriate to erect some other type of barrier in the trouble spot, great. But the DOT is not the villain in this matter. It is every driver out there, speeding, tailgating, talking on their phones or otherwise being inattentive: all the driver behaviors one sees continually.
Sadly, the bulk of the U.S. population expects to be babysat and refuses to take personal responsibility anymore.
