Julie Muhlstein did a great job with her Feb. 6 column regarding the boneheads in D.C. who “forgot” to pay their taxes. (“Law-breaking lawmakers set a poor example.”) As she pointed out, Americans go to great lengths to pay their taxes, such as taking out loans, selling stock, etc. In other words, doing the right thing. Unsung heroes, good Americans, doing what’s right.
It’s an outrage to find out that these wealthy government employees are setting a poor example by being tax evaders, which is a crime, I believe. People get sent to prison. Their assets, assuming they have any, are confiscated.
At a time when our country has such a poor image, when President Obama is trying to get the country straightened out, fix what’s wrong, these poor examples are chosen for important government positions. Then we find out that they owe thousands of dollars in back taxes. Shame on them!
Also, why hasn’t the IRS done something before now? Why didn’t they act accordingly, like they would if we ordinary folks “forgot” to pay taxes. Gee, maybe I can just “forget” and then apologize. All is forgiven. I don’t think so. These tax evaders should be put on trial and sent to prison for tax evasion. But of course they won’t be. The government protects its own.
