Last week was “Be Kind to Animals” week, so it was ironic that on Friday, while driving along on a highway near Maltby, we stopped to put newspapers in a bin provided for just that. Behind the bin there was a cage. It looked fairly new and since it seemed to be discarded, I thought it would be nice to clean it up and give it to a local shelter. They are always in need.
This cage needed a good bath, so later that night I proceeded to do just that. There was a purple igloo-shaped plastic house in the cage and I took that out and saw a cute little black Guinea pig with white fluffy hair around its neck, with its nose buried in a corner, appearing dead. I reached for a small piece of hair to lift it out and the cage seemed to explode with the action inside. It was not dead. What to do? I was not sure what they prefer to eat so I put in grass, cat food and some seeds, hoping he would do well overnight. In the morning I took it (I did not know the sex) to Best Rabbits on Lake City Way in Seattle.
This darling little Guinea pig has another chance now, as he will be given a thorough cleaning, then put in a clean cage with good things to eat, etc. I do hope that this time it will get a really good home.
What is it with our educated people that they can ruthlessly throw away a helpless animal, especially in a week we are supposed to be kind to all animals – and that includes people.
