Dunshee deserves credit for his work

The recent political hit letter by Harv Harbaugh (“Legislature: Put the focus on Olympia’s problems,” April 26) claiming Rep. Hans Dunshee was wasting time advocating the removal of a monument to the Confederacy and Jefferson Davis, brings a question to mind.

Would Mr. Harbaugh have opposed, as a waste of time, the removal of the statues of Lenin and Stalin, when communism was overthrown in the Soviet Union? A statue of King George was taken down during the American Revolution. Would Mr. Harbaugh have opposed that? Removing a symbol of one of the leaders of the rebellion that attempted to perpetuate slavery and killed more Americans than all other American wars is certainly worthy of some time.

In the Legislature, Rep. Dunshee was instrumental in breaking the gridlock and getting things moving. While the Republicans, for three years, refused to move on issues such as transportation and kept budgets tied up for months of overtime, the Democrats, including Rep. Dunshee, put a transportation plan on the ballot for our approval and balanced the budget on time without a general tax increase.

Good work, Rep. Dunshee.
