Memorial Day reminded me of World War II in the Aleutian Islands. The movie “Pearl Harbor” was well received, but I just wonder how many people remember the other harbor: Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
It was 60 years ago, on June 3 and 4, 1942, that Dutch Harbor was bombed by Japanese planes. About 40 men died that time. I was there as a civilian worker for the contractor that was building a military base. Being 80 years old now, I still remember the planes dropping their bombs and seeing the damage. We sent out a survey party to locate where all bombs hit and I still have a map showing the locations.
We should not forget the men killed and wounded there. I know I won’t.
