Regarding the Sept. 3 article, “Labor leaders find few takers for good jobs”:
Students finishing high school or college have a huge number of job opportunities available to them as the baby boomers retire. Many will find that they enjoy creating things that contribute to the community such as housing or commercial buildings.
Careers in construction require an education in order to advance. A great first step exists at Edmonds Community College in the Construction Industry Training (CIT) Program. To my knowledge, CIT is the only college program in Snohomish County that is preparing students for apprenticeships or entry-level jobs in the construction industry. Graduates earn a certificate in just three quarters by attending two evening classes each week. Prior experience is not required. CIT is a great environment, with small classes, to learn introductory blueprint reading, layout, hand- and power-tool use, construction materials, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and finishes.
Additionally, students earn an OSHA 10-hour safety certification, flagging and CPR/first aid certifications. For more information please call Sue Z. Hart at 425-640-1908 or refer to cit.edcc.edu. The next class begins Sept. 24.
