Thank you for publishing the editorial cartoon by Lisa Benson in the May 15 Herald. While I personally deplore her usually retrograde political stance, I admire her terrific cartooning skills and appreciate your adding her contrasting voice to the newspaper’s customary lineup of editorial cartoons. But Lisa’s drawing in May 15 Herald, illustrating the White House as having won in a series of competitions that culminates in an apparently great “win” in our move of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, is a real show-stopper.
If the White House is “winning,” then someone else is “losing.” The losers in this instance are you and me, the country’s position of influence for good in the world, and hopes of peaceful resolution of conflicts in the region. (The more general loss to us, as a people, would be the systematic dismantling of all that has made America great, as documented in the rest of the Opinion page’s entries of the day.) As I said, Benson’s cartoons are great. It’s not so great that her venomous views merely reflect the snakebite that has lately filled our nation’s political veins. We’ve got to find a way of returning to some level of hope and fairness for actual people.
