We encourage the Edmonds City Council to retain the crime prevention officer position in the Edmonds Police Department. It has a tremendous impact with educating the public, and with a block watch program proven to decrease burglaries in those areas. We personally have been involved with Block Watch and we’ve seen it work.
The crime prevention officer sends out quarterly reports to the block watch representatives, showing locations of burglaries and other news, like “Neighbors Watching,” a new traffic calming program. The CPO is also responsible as the head of the volunteer program, and citizen awareness to protect one’s home and property. Actually, the CPO’s job description allows far more positive citizen contact than the patrol officer.
The program has gone international. The crime prevention officer has been invited and has gone to European cities to explain and educate about our Edmonds program.
Our position is that it is absolutely necessary for our safety and security to continue with this position and its essential duties for the citizens of Edmonds.
