“Some men are born great, some men achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” – William Shakespeare
George W. Bush has done an excellent job as president. He has risen to the challenge. But are any issues from the last election resolved? Just one – who will be president for the next three years.
The real issue in the last election was that democracy lost, and that issue hasn’t gone away. In spite of one man having more votes than the other nationwide, the man with half a million fewer votes became president. Democracy lost in Florida, too. The Florida Supreme Court recognized this and ordered all votes across the entire state recounted. The federal Supreme Court, having seven of its nine justices appointed by Republican presidents, said, “Maybe you can do that. But, even if you could, your time to do so has just expired. George Bush will be president.”
And we bore witness to the world that we are not a true democracy. Its not even the first time this has happened – it’s the third.
America has always risen to new challenges for democracy. Freedom for slaves, the right to vote for all men, the right to vote for women, and soon, the elimination of the electoral college. This is inevitable and necessary for America to survive. As slavery revealed our sin of hypocrisy against freedom, so does our present election process reveal our sin of hypocrisy against democracy.
Since we pronounce ourselves as a beacon for democracy, and since we have bombed Afghanistan for democracy, let us therefore become a democracy. A true democracy. A nation where the man who actually receives the most votes becomes president.
America will become a nation where one vote anywhere in the land counts the same as one vote anywhere else. And, this is a battle between good and evil. Will the president lead us in that battle? Will he lead America to true democracy?
