In a recent letter to the editor about the Electoral College, the writer outlined his rationale for why it should be retained. In his remarks, the author states that the Electoral College is needed to assure that the tyranny of the majority does not destroy the liberties of the minority.
While this may have been the intent of our “wisest founders,” the results of the 2016 presidential election clearly demonstrated that the Electoral College may actually accomplish the exact opposite of the intent of our “wisest founders” in which the “Tyranny of the minority destroys the liberties of the majority.” The Electoral College assures nothing.
Let the voters decide who shall be president of the United States without intermediaries representing them in their vote for the president, just as when American voters decide who shall be their representatives in the Congress.
