Do we really need the Snohomish County Council to instruct us in morality? Isn’t that what we have churches and their ministers for? It strikes me as very ironic to hear a career politician, John Koster, using “moral” grounds to argue for allowing discrimination against certain county employees in the distribution of benefits.
“Liberty and justice for all” is what our Pledge of Allegiance calls for – not liberty and justice for only those who conform to certain Old Testament based strictures. For very sound reasons, our Constitution does not include the Bible in our laws, nor the Koran, the tenets of Buddhism, nor other religion-based doctrines.
Each tax-funded employee of Snohomish County deserves equal treatment in all aspects of the job – pay, benefits and opportunity to advance, regardless of the person’s gender, age, sexual preference, physical attributes, religious affiliation, race or other of the variations of human life. Ability to do the work is the only “moral” criterion for employment decisions. Fairness to all is the highest morality – “Love one another…”
After all, when county employees pay their taxes, they receive no exemptions based on race, age, gender, sexual preference, physical abilities, etc. We’re all equal opportunity when it comes to supporting our government.
