I would like to respond to a letter that appeared Monday written by a resident of Marysville. Pardon me if I get annoyed when someone who lives miles away from my neighborhood and pays no property taxes in my community tells me and my neighbors to “get over” something that impacts our quality of life considerably, but not his own.
I also happen to live on the top of Rucker Hill although my home abuts the Jackson Elementary School parking lot to the north, which places me considerably farther from the shooting range than Marian Krell and those who reside in “The Preserve” immediately adjacent to it.
One might suppose that the sound of gunfire emanating from that distance would pose little or no intrusion to my household. But I quickly understood my neighbors’ distress when recently, I began to work occasionally from home and had the opportunity to share in their experience. One morning around 9 a.m., the sound of endless rounds of gunfire commenced and for most of the day, it seemed as if I were on a battlefield rather than at home in the quiet haven that I normally enjoy so much. As a rule, the only sound I would hear would be that of birdsong and school children at play next door.
And what about that detail? I live next to an elementary school. How inappropriate is it for our children to be hearing endless rounds of gunfire while they play at recess or all day long when it is warm and the windows are open?
If Marian Krell chooses to speak up for herself and us, I say God bless her. And thank you, Mayor Stephanson, for being responsive to our concerns.
