As a small-yard “hortaholic,” I look forward to Steve Smith’s The Whistling Gardener lively and wise writing about all aspects of gardening and the joy and meaning that plants of all kinds bring to our lives. What he wrote about bringing plants in for the winter, was helpful; “by manipulating the light, water, feed and humidity, we can usually keep them happy. Making them feel like they are part of the family, talking to them and telling them you love them, playing soothing music and keeping them company will all go a long way to being successful. In many ways they are no different than us.”
I agree and find that I am rewarded not only with flourishing plants in the small yard that I continue to landscape; but also with appreciation from neighbors and passing strollers. His seasonal advice is always appropriate as is his knowledgeable hints regarding specific indoor and outdoor plants and their care and up-to-date information about new plants and how to fit them in my yard.
I am a long-time fan of The Herald and look forward to all of it every morning. I also appreciate the great people who deliver it early here so I can enjoy it with breakfast here on South Whidbey.
