Enough with you nanny go-gooders!

With regard to The Herald editorial, “Lawmakers: Resolve to protect non-smokers”: I’m a non-smoker. I hate both first-hand and second-hand smoke. However, there is one thing I hate more: Nanny legislatures and nanny editors who want to protect me from myself.

I don’t need your protection! And, society doesn’t need more laws by nanny do-gooders. I don’t frequent bars, taverns, bowling alleys and restaurants where smoking is likely to bother me. Your proposed bill does nothing for me that I can’t do for myself. And, your legislation is just another increased burden on businesses, which are already overburdened with laws and regulations (and strangling our economy). If these types of establishments want my patronage, they will do something about smoking. If not, I will go elsewhere.

You do-gooders are not needed. Let the people vote with their dollars which establishments they want to frequent. And, this goes for The Herald. The Herald can best serve the community by presenting us with the information relevant to our lives. Start informing us as to the progress in Iraq, which you seem to be withholding. You publish an article on Ted Kennedy blasting the president (which is not news) but not a word about Zell Miller, another prominent Democratic senator, coming out in support of the president.

By withholding certain information and publishing other types of information you try to mold public opinion that you think is right, rather than letting people form their own opinion. I am quite capable of making responsible decisions without you nanny do-gooders trying to do it for me. Just give me the information I need to make informed decisions and let me decide for myself. That, or I go somewhere else.
